On a night littered with rhetoric surrounding the recent MeToo movements, TimesUp campaign and the usual anti-Trump mockery, there were plenty of upsets and shocks at the years Academy Awards ceremony. Hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel, whose opening monologue didn’t shy away from satirizing the best picture blunder of yesteryear amongst the usual political satire, brought a welcoming witty sense of humor, which led to some introverted set pieces including a jet-ski for the shortest winners speech, gatecrashing a public screening of a movie with a-listers armed with confectionary and a brilliant on-going joke about Christopher Plummer’s advanced years. It was another superlative turn from the late night talk-host - managing to shake free the embarrassment of last year’s La La Land/Moonlight fiasco.
And a splendid ceremony it was; whether it was the diverse presenter list, recognition of different cultures through the use of music, but the night was stolen by the surprise winners and losers, below are those who picked up their golden statue.

Guillermo Del Toro’s astonishing fantasy romance THE SHAPE OF WATER scooped four - the most awards: winning best director and the coveted best picture (which Del Toro humorously double-checked the veracity of as he took the podium) amongst other's. Performance awards went to the odds-on favorites; Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand, Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell respectively, in a year that any eventual winner in their category would have been a worthy winner.
As far as my predictions go, i faired better than usual - although I must admit that I am delighted to have been wrong in my estimations to the Academy’s love of Jordan Peele’s stellar horror-comedy GET OUT, which picked up the Best Original Screenplay, beating out my pick Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, to the universal acclaim of the Dolby Theatre.
Even if the Oscars are a admittedly pointless and do little more than self-congratulate smug millionaires on films released in cinemas within the last two months, there was a gentrified elegance about tonight’s proceedings, and you'll find a great deal to admire about the unification of a diverse group of people’s and finally acknowledging groups ostracized in society.
